How do slot games work?

The anatomy of a slot game

Most slot games share a few core ingredients. Whether you're playing a classic slot or trying something a little different, you'll usually come across the following features:

Reels or grid

Reels are the vertical columns that spin when you hit the play button. Traditional slot games often have three or five reels, but some have more.

Other games replace reels with a grid. Instead of spinning columns, symbols appear in a set arrangement of rows and columns across the screen.

Whichever format a game uses, its job is the same: to display the symbols that result from your spin.

Rows

Rows run horizontally across the game area.

A five-reel slot with three rows, for example, shows three symbol positions on each reel. Some games use larger layouts with extra rows, creating more positions for symbols and winning combinations to appear.

Think of rows as the shelves where the symbols land while the reels steal the spotlight.

Symbols

Symbols are the images that appear on the reels or grid.

Every game has its own theme, so symbols can range from fruit and gems to characters, animals or quirky objects. Some symbols are worth more than others, and certain combinations can create wins.

Paylines, win lines or win ways

This is where things start to come together.

Paylines or win lines are the paths that symbols must follow to create winning combinations. A winning line might run straight across a reel set, or it could zig-zag its way across the screen.

Some games use win ways instead of fixed lines. With win ways, matching symbols usually need to land on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel and continuing across. The potential payout could be higher if more matching symbols land in the correct positions.

Stake

Your stake is the amount you choose to play for each spin.

Most games let you adjust your stake before you start. Depending on the game's rules, your chosen stake can affect the size of any payouts.

Before pressing spin, check you're happy with the amount you've selected.

Spin/play button

This is the button that gets everything moving.

When you press spin, the game generates a random outcome and then displays it through the reels or grid. The spinning animation creates the excitement, but it's there to reveal the result rather than determine it.

In other words, the reels are putting on the show, while the game's mechanics are doing the work behind the curtain.

Balance and win display

Usually found near the bottom of the screen, these displays help you keep track of what's happening.

Your balance shows how much money is available for play, while the win display shows any prize awarded during a spin.

They're not the flashiest parts of the game, but they're definitely among the most useful!

Game info and paytable

The paytable is your go-to guide for understanding a game.

Think of it as the quickest way to get your bearings before you start spinning.

It typically explains:

• How winning combinations work
• Which symbols appear in the game
• The value of different symbol combinations
• Any special features or bonus rounds
• Available stake options

If you're trying a game for the first time, spending a minute checking the paytable can save you a lot of head-scratching later.

What is an RNG?

RNG stands for Random Number Generator.

This is the system that determines the outcome of every spin. In simple terms, the RNG continuously generates random results. When you press spin, the game uses one of those results and displays it on screen as symbols landing on the reels or grid.

The most important thing to understand is that each spin is separate from every other spin.

That means:

• Every spin has a random outcome
• Previous results don't affect future results
• A winning spin doesn't make another win more or less likely
• A losing spin doesn't mean a win is around the corner

The previous spin doesn't leave clues for the next one. Every round starts fresh, so there's no pattern to follow and no secret code hidden in the reels.
